I am an avid believer in finding ways to empower oneself and finding appreciation in all the things done well. Even if it is that you simply did your hair in a great new look, or you received an excellent grade on a midterm, you should constantly reward yourself. One way, without spending a dime, that I reward myself for the things that make me feel good is...music. Music always sets me free, gives me good feelings, and helps me to appreciate my life and all the good happening in it.
I have specific songs that I put on during certain occasions. If it's a beautiful, bright day and a guy I'm digging just sent me a text that gives me butterflies, I may put on "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz or "Senorita" by Justin Timberlake.
My newest obsession with Bruno Mars and B.O.B "Nothin On You" and "Somewhere In Brooklyn" has been added to my playlist, although I've only become a Brooklynite a few months ago. B.O.B has a special place in my heart because I had the opportunity of meeting him a few years back when I was living in Atlanta. He did a small show at some hole in the wall venue, but there was so much hype about him all over the city. When I heard his voice, I was instantly a fan, and anticipated a hopeful album. He has since stormed the charts, and collaborated with many artists across all spectrums. The same goes for Bruno Mars. Bruno is such a hot topic on the music scene, his voice is so sexy, I love listening to all his feel good music.
When I wake up in the morning I put on Beyonce's "Ego", well, because I have a big ego in the morning when I've done my makeup flawlessly and put together an amazing outfit, I'm feeling myself and need that extra Umph that the song gives me. Beyonce is always good to dance to in front of the mirror anyway! LoL!
Of course, like the entire world I was an immediate fan of Drake. But I, like many young woman, choose to believe that we are the original Drake fans because 'Degrassi' was the soap opera of the teen generation. Jimmy was always my favorite character, and I'm going to stick with that!
Anyway, when I step out onto my stoop getting ready for the walk to the J train, I always turn on "Fancy" by Drake. It's a feel good ladies anthem performed by two very sexy men of hip hop, Drake and TI, produced by Swizz Beats. It's a nice reminder of how there are men who appreciate all that we do as ladies to stay young, fresh, and fly. Another song that gives me fuel for the day is "So Hard" by Rihanna. The beat is uplifting, and the words speak to my life perfectly. Favorite line: "My runway never looked so clear, the baddest bitch in heels right here!". I love any anthem which gives me a boost, makes me feel great about myself, and reminds me why I am who I am and should be proud of all that I do.
When I'm thinking of my son, or laying in bed with him at night I love to put on "Heaven" by Jamie Foxx. It's such a touching song about a parent's love for their child. I also love "Zion" by Lauryn Hill because my story was very similar to hers, people told me to be smart and think of college, but I chose Motherhood, and that was the greatest choice I've ever made in my life. I also like "Baby of Mine" by Bette Middler from the 'Beaches' soundtrack. It is a touching song of love and protection.
And when I'm winding down at night, I love to listen to a variety of songs by Kelly Clarkson, Paramore, Kanye West, Drake, Mariah Carey, just to name a few.
I believe everyone has specific songs they listen to on a daily basis because, without always realizing it, the song may relate to your life in someway and you feel like the Artist is speaking directly to you. Music feeds the soul. Fans feed the Artist. It is a circle that we as fans, and them as artists all depend on.
